Today’s e-commerce market has to take the social aspect into consideration. That means leveraging social media as a tool. You’re probably already maintaining a social media presence and running social media ads. In this article, we will make a case for why you should also have an actual store on social media. We’re talking about Facebook Shops.

## What is Facebook Shops?

[Facebook Shops](https://about.fb.com/news/2020/05/introducing-facebook-shops/) is a part of the Facebook platform. It’s a shopping interface that a business can set up and link to their business pages. It can be a single online store for both Facebook and Instagram. Brands choose the products and customize their shop with a cover image and accent colors. This means any seller can bring their business online and connect with customers wherever and whenever it’s convenient for them.

People who are already socializing with friends and keeping up with businesses on Facebook will be able to find your shop easily. Your business page will have a link, and you can run ads that lead to it, too. Some businesses can even offer a native buying experience, so users can enjoy shopping on Facebook and then check out without leaving the site or app. Users can also bookmark favorite items and message the business directly through Messenger if they have questions.

## Top reasons to sell on Facebook marketplace

#### 1\. Global audience

Facebook has 2.7 billion monthly active users worldwide. If your business has a presence on this platform, you’ve access to a vast audience. Statistics show that people want to connect with brands on social media. [78% of US consumers](https://www.kleinerperkins.com/perspectives/internet-trends-report-2018/) say they’ve discovered products on Facebook. And there’s now a dedicated marketplace tab on Facebook. Users can browse products by category or search for a specific shop. They’ll also be able to access your shop through the prominent View on Website button on your business’s Facebook page. This sets the stage for your business to benefit from the shopping development on Facebook.

#### 2\. No monthly fee

Even though there are no initiation or monthly fees, some payments associated with being a merchant on this platform occur. [Facebook takes 5%](https://www.facebook.com/business/help/223030991929920?id=533228987210412) of all orders processed with their in-app checkout option (or $0.40 on items cost $8 or less). These fees include taxes and payment processing costs. Merchants don’t need to worry about manually paying for their Facebook shop since Facebook automatically deducts the fees.

#### 3\. Easy to save time and sell more

In an e-commerce shop, a Messenger chatbot plays the role of a sales associate. Set up a chatbot and equip it to answer common questions about your Facebook Shop’s products. It will automatically respond to every customer inquiry and give them information in a seamless, back-and-forth style. That means prospective buyers will no longer fall through the cracks because you were too busy manually responding to messages. And after answering the user’s question, your chatbot can even cross-sell and upsell additional products related to the one the customer showed interest in.

## How to set up a Facebook marketplace automation

Setting up a Facebook Shop is simple to do but can be a game-changer for the success of your new or well-established brand. ## Facebook marketplace and chatbots

Facebook Shops lets you access a vast, engaged audience. They load faster than a mobile website, and you can make your shoppers' lives easier by enabling in-app checkout. Thanks to the prominent tab and buttons, shops efficiently market with Facebook ads, making organic discovery easy.

Integrating a Messenger chatbot helps Facebook Shops grow faster with conversational marketing. Setting up a chatbot for e-commerce to do all of the above on Facebook is easy. With Chatfuel, no coding experience is required. [Sign up](http://dashboard.chatfuel.com) for your free account today to get a chatbot for e-commerce up and running in minutes.

Top reasons to sell on Facebook marketplace and how to set up a Facebook shop automation with chatbot. Today’s e-commerce market has to take the social aspect.

How to automate your Facebook marketplace

You’re probably already familiar with the [most common uses for chatbots](https://chatfuel.com/blog/top-9-reasons-your-business-needs-a-chatbot/). They can help businesses do things like:

- Answer FAQs instantly, 24/7

- Generate and qualify leads

- Recommend products

- Move shoppers down the funnel

But what many business owners and marketers don’t know is that chatbots can help with other areas of your business too. They can help improve SEO, skyrocket digital ad performance, boost customer retention, and lots more. So whether your business already has a chatbot or you’re considering building one, scroll to learn about several extra perks they can bring to your brand.

## 1\. Chatbots can decrease your website’s bounce rate for SEO

**Bounce rate** is the percentage of a website’s visitors who only visit a single page on the site before leaving. While these statistics don’t count toward your search rankings per se, websites that appear higher on Google do [tend to have lower bounce rates](https://backlinko.com/search-engine-ranking).

Website abandonment is a real issue, especially for online merchants. In fact, the average ecommerce site experiences \[bounce rates [of around 42%](https://www.similarweb.com/corp/blog/bounce-rate/#:~:text=In%20general%2C%20you%20should%20expect,average%20between%2045%25%2D65%25.\)). Why? Because typically, websites with high bounce rates have user experience (UX) issues. Their pages often aren’t intuitively designed, which makes it difficult for visitors to navigate. And if people have to spend too much time trying to find what they want, they’ll simply go elsewhere.

Chatbots can help decrease bounce rates by offering navigation help from the get-go. You can [add a chatbot to your website](https://chatfuel.com/blog/add-a-messenger-chatbot-to-your-website) and set it up to ask questions that get straight to the heart of a customer’s issue. From there, it can point them in the right direction—whether that’s to an information page, a product page, or even [to a live agent.](https://docs.chatfuel.com/en/articles/849315-live-chat)

<figure><img srcset="https://storage.googleapis.com/chatfuel-cms-staging/pic/xs_hidden_benefits_of_chatbots_0_fea3344df4/xs_hidden_benefits_of_chatbots_0_fea3344df4.webp 300w, https://storage.googleapis.com/chatfuel-cms-staging/pic/sm_hidden_benefits_of_chatbots_0_fea3344df4/sm_hidden_benefits_of_chatbots_0_fea3344df4.webp 768w, https://storage.googleapis.com/chatfuel-cms-staging/pic/md_hidden_benefits_of_chatbots_0_fea3344df4/md_hidden_benefits_of_chatbots_0_fea3344df4.webp 1280w, https://storage.googleapis.com/chatfuel-cms-staging/pic/lg_hidden_benefits_of_chatbots_0_fea3344df4/lg_hidden_benefits_of_chatbots_0_fea3344df4.webp 1920w, https://storage.googleapis.com/chatfuel-cms-staging/pic/xl_hidden_benefits_of_chatbots_0_fea3344df4/xl_hidden_benefits_of_chatbots_0_fea3344df4.webp 2650w" width="2650" height="1394" src="https://storage.googleapis.com/chatfuel-cms-staging/pic/original_hidden_benefits_of_chatbots_0_fea3344df4/original_hidden_benefits_of_chatbots_0_fea3344df4.webp" alt=""><figcaption>Leeds-Beckett University offers a chatbot on their homepage to help visitors navigate the site.</figcaption></figure>

As Nicolina Savelli, Wily Global’s Content and Social Media Marketer, explains: *“\[Chatbots\] dramatically decreased our bounce rate to 2%. \[…\] The option forced users to browse longer and ask questions, rather than bouncing off the page.”*

## 2\. Chatbots can increase session duration for SEO

**Session duration** is the amount of time that people spend on your website before returning to the SERP (search engine results page). Google uses session duration to help rank your website. Longer website sessions, for example, show the algorithm that your website’s information is relevant to the search that led the visitor to it.

[39% of B2B marketers](https://drift.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/2020-State-of-Conversational-Marketing.pdf) already say that conversational marketing techniques like chatbots will increase the time visitors spend on your website. It’s similar to how Messenger bots decrease bounce rate: they can help customers find the information they’re looking for more easily (and maybe some extra information they didn’t know they needed).

Visitors can ask for help on specific problems and chatbots will provide personalized answers that guide users to the correct information. Or, if the visitor isn’t looking to solve a specific problem, chatbots can help increase their session duration by asking them a few questions and recommending relevant content.

## 3\. Chatbots can improve your customer service ratings

For local businesses, reviews are the [third most important ranking factor](https://moz.com/local-search-ranking-factors/) if you want to make the cut for [Google’s Local Pack](https://www.rankranger.com/seo-glossary/local-pack). And even if your business isn’t geared toward local services, reviews still feature as [a top Google ranking factor](https://backlinko.com/google-ranking-factors) since they boost your site’s reputation.

Improving the customer experience is one way to get positive reviews on sites like TrustPilot and Yelp as well as on your Facebook page—and the keys to a great customer experience are **personalization** and **speed**. [88% of marketers](https://www.evergage.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Evergage-2018-Trends-in-Personalization-Survey.pdf) agree that customers have come to expect personalized service. And if it’s not available immediately, they’re likely to abandon your brand for the competition.

Messenger chatbots can improve your customer service in both of these areas. First, thanks to user attributes, bots can personalize the conversation with everything from the user’s name and time zone to preferences they’ve shared in past chats. And, of course, chatbots are available to answer questions instantly, 24 hours a day. [Studies show](https://www.intercom.com/blog/the-state-of-chatbots) that they can boost customer satisfaction by a quarter and speed up response times by 300%.

Look at the HelloFresh chatbot, for example. Their “Freddie FreshBot” [automatically messages customers who leave comments](https://chatfuel.com/blog/how-to-turn-facebook-post-commenters-into-customers) on HelloFresh’s Facebook posts. From there, the bot can answer questions, share coupon codes, and suggest recipes.

<figure><img srcset="https://storage.googleapis.com/chatfuel-cms-staging/pic/xs_hidden_benefits_of_chatbots_1_1862743136/xs_hidden_benefits_of_chatbots_1_1862743136.webp 300w, https://storage.googleapis.com/chatfuel-cms-staging/pic/sm_hidden_benefits_of_chatbots_1_1862743136/sm_hidden_benefits_of_chatbots_1_1862743136.webp 768w, https://storage.googleapis.com/chatfuel-cms-staging/pic/md_hidden_benefits_of_chatbots_1_1862743136/md_hidden_benefits_of_chatbots_1_1862743136.webp 1280w, https://storage.googleapis.com/chatfuel-cms-staging/pic/lg_hidden_benefits_of_chatbots_1_1862743136/lg_hidden_benefits_of_chatbots_1_1862743136.webp 1920w, https://storage.googleapis.com/chatfuel-cms-staging/pic/xl_hidden_benefits_of_chatbots_1_1862743136/xl_hidden_benefits_of_chatbots_1_1862743136.webp 1600w" width="1600" height="1046" src="https://storage.googleapis.com/chatfuel-cms-staging/pic/original_hidden_benefits_of_chatbots_1_1862743136/original_hidden_benefits_of_chatbots_1_1862743136.webp" alt=""><figcaption>The HelloFresh chatbot has improved the brand's customer service.</figcaption></figure>

The result? HelloFresh’s [response times are down 76%](https://chatfuel.com/blog/hellofresh-reduces-support-wait-times-with-chatfuel-messenger-bot), which leads to lots of satisfied customers, as you can see from the [24,000 five-star reviews](https://www.trustpilot.com/review/hellofresh.com) HelloFresh now has.

## 4\. Chatbot data can inform your content marketing strategy

Content marketing is one of the most powerful ways to improve your search rankings. By identifying important questions that your target audience may have and answering them through great content, you demonstrate the authority and expertise of your brand. By optimizing this content with keywords related to these issues, you push your site up search engine rankings.

While keyword research can certainly help you find out what your customers are searching for, it’s sometimes easier to hear it straight from the horse’s mouth. That’s where chatbots come in, because they can directly learn more about what users need and are looking for through a friendly back-and-forth conversation or quiz. Right now, only [22% of organizations](https://www.intercom.com/blog/the-state-of-chatbots) are using chatbots to collect data. That means 78% are missing a huge opportunity to better inform their content marketing strategies.

<figure><img srcset="https://storage.googleapis.com/chatfuel-cms-staging/pic/xs_hidden_benefits_of_chatbots_2_33404982ce/xs_hidden_benefits_of_chatbots_2_33404982ce.webp 300w, https://storage.googleapis.com/chatfuel-cms-staging/pic/sm_hidden_benefits_of_chatbots_2_33404982ce/sm_hidden_benefits_of_chatbots_2_33404982ce.webp 768w, https://storage.googleapis.com/chatfuel-cms-staging/pic/md_hidden_benefits_of_chatbots_2_33404982ce/md_hidden_benefits_of_chatbots_2_33404982ce.webp 1280w, https://storage.googleapis.com/chatfuel-cms-staging/pic/lg_hidden_benefits_of_chatbots_2_33404982ce/lg_hidden_benefits_of_chatbots_2_33404982ce.webp 1920w, https://storage.googleapis.com/chatfuel-cms-staging/pic/xl_hidden_benefits_of_chatbots_2_33404982ce/xl_hidden_benefits_of_chatbots_2_33404982ce.webp 940w" width="940" height="788" src="https://storage.googleapis.com/chatfuel-cms-staging/pic/original_hidden_benefits_of_chatbots_2_33404982ce/original_hidden_benefits_of_chatbots_2_33404982ce.webp" alt=""><figcaption>A food blogger could use a chatbot to find out what people are most interested in, and then optimize her blog accordingly.</figcaption></figure>

By collecting chatbot data, you’ll be able to discover the most commonly asked questions and biggest challenges that your customers face. These takeaways can guide your content strategy so that you have a clearer idea of the types of articles, guides, product videos, etc. that your customers will find useful. In turn, you’ll end up ranking higher for key search terms that are relevant to solving problems within your specific target audience.

## 5\. Chatbot data can improve your social media ad performance and ROI

We’ve already discussed how chatbots are great tools for getting to know your customers better. The good news is that this customer data can also help improve the performance of your social media ads. The more you learn about your audience, the more precisely you can target them.

Take Beauty Player, a Taiwan-based ecommerce shop for skincare products. At first, their ads were expensive and underperforming. But then [they launched a chatbot](https://chatfuel.com/blog/beauty-startup-sells-more-with-messenger-bot/) and started gathering data about their users that way. They used that data to create custom and Lookalike audiences for their Facebook ads. The result? The brand reduced their cost per conversion by more than half — from $8.30 to $4.06 —and got a 10x return on ad spend.

<figure><img><figcaption>Learn how to instantly send data about your chatbot users to Facebook Ads Manager to create Lookalike audiences.</figcaption></figure>

## 6\. Chatbots can encourage social sharing

Your social media strategy should strive to increase brand awareness by encouraging your audience to share your content for you. Known as the “snowball effect,” you’ll gain more traction when your fans share your posts since your content will then seen by their audiences too. It’s one of the most effective ways to build brand awareness quickly.

To get this effect started, [build a chatbot](https://youtu.be/D4n6VLQHE5U) that serves a useful purpose to your target audience. Then, encourage them to share the link to the Facebook bot with their friends, who are typically like-minded individuals.

The Taiwanese political party, Can’t Stop This Party, used this technique to great success. Founded by young people, the party wanted to urge other young voters to take part in the election. [They created a Messenger chatbot](https://youtu.be/D4n6VLQHE5U) that educates voters on the issues and reminds them to head to the polls on election day. The helpful, engaging, and interactive bot was a huge success with its initial user base, so those people shared it. As a result, more than 40,000 youth turned out to vote in the elections! That’s the power of social sharing.

<figure><img srcset="https://storage.googleapis.com/chatfuel-cms-staging/pic/xs_hidden_benefits_of_chatbots_3_279d60832f/xs_hidden_benefits_of_chatbots_3_279d60832f.webp 300w, https://storage.googleapis.com/chatfuel-cms-staging/pic/sm_hidden_benefits_of_chatbots_3_279d60832f/sm_hidden_benefits_of_chatbots_3_279d60832f.webp 768w, https://storage.googleapis.com/chatfuel-cms-staging/pic/md_hidden_benefits_of_chatbots_3_279d60832f/md_hidden_benefits_of_chatbots_3_279d60832f.webp 1280w, https://storage.googleapis.com/chatfuel-cms-staging/pic/lg_hidden_benefits_of_chatbots_3_279d60832f/lg_hidden_benefits_of_chatbots_3_279d60832f.webp 1920w, https://storage.googleapis.com/chatfuel-cms-staging/pic/xl_hidden_benefits_of_chatbots_3_279d60832f/xl_hidden_benefits_of_chatbots_3_279d60832f.webp 2080w" width="2080" height="1168" src="https://storage.googleapis.com/chatfuel-cms-staging/pic/original_hidden_benefits_of_chatbots_3_279d60832f/original_hidden_benefits_of_chatbots_3_279d60832f.webp" alt=""><figcaption>The chatbot that Can't Stop This Party created to encourage young people to vote was a success, because its initial users shared it with their friends.</figcaption></figure>

## 7\. Chatbots can boost customer retention

Acquiring new customers can get expensive, since it’s common knowledge that you need [eight touch points](https://blog.hubspot.com/sales/the-ultimate-guide-to-prospecting-how-many-touchpoints-when-and-what-type#:~:text=With%20this%20in%20mind%2C%20eight,might%20be%20right%20for%20another.\)) with a prospect before you’ll get the sale. Of course, customer acquisition needs to be a part of every business’s strategy. But retention should be too, since it’s cheaper and more efficient to focus on recapturing past customers who have already proven they liked your product or service.

Netting return customers relies on a range of factors, including how well you know them, how personalized your services are, and how slick your sales process is.

- Let’s consider **personalization** first. Nowadays, [most consumers](https://www.redpointglobal.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/RedPoint-Gaps-in-CX-White-Paper_3.20.19.pdf) expect businesses to personalize their services. That’s why most brands are now using personalization techniques in their customer retention strategies. And, as we’ve discussed, chatbots are ideal for this. In using more personalized customer service interactions like bots, [over half of business leaders](https://info.ada.support/hubfs/Ada%20Content%20Assets/Ada_Forrester%20Opportunity%20Snapshot.pdf?utm_campaign=Forrester%20Ops%20Report&utm_medium=email&_hsmi=72058063&_hsenc=p2ANqtz-_8dT3oFjo4tn0ZHnVAyoxnnQtGBh32IKMbpzmJKYgR-9vP9tI1a8ZL9PFhhl_AHLgxJd_xFFHeUoC_phoeoD6Rfn2FDA&utm_content=72058063&utm_source=hs_automation) have found that they’ve ended up with more loyal customers.

- Secondly, consider the **user** **experience** of your sales process. Is it easy to buy (and buy again) from your brand? Consider that [a third of retailers](http://f9e7d91e313f8622e557-24a29c251add4cb0f3d45e39c18c202f.r83.cf1.rackcdn.com/RTP_RT208_SURV_CustomerAcquisitionRetention_July_2019_Final.pdf) say it’s hard to retain customers due to their long sales cycles. What’s the correlation? It’s simple: Customers don’t want to buy from companies who make it difficult to purchase their products. The process needs to be fast, smooth, and efficient for the shopper.

That’s where chatbots come in again. Messenger bots have the power to ease friction in the buying process, making it easy for customers to buy again. Check out [the story of Photobooth Deluxe](https://chatfuel.com/blog/ecommerce-entrepreneur-uses-chatfuel-bot-to-automate-over-100-000-in-sales/), for example. Recognizing that 95% of its customers came through Facebook, the photobooth company switched out its slow, manual ordering method for a super-efficient Facebook chatbot which can handle the whole process. In doing this, the brand was able to automate over $100,000 of orders within a few months, all because their bot made the repeat-buying process easy for customers.

Chatbots are known for answering questions and boosting sales, but they can also help with SEO, content marketing, ads, and more.

7 Hidden Benefits of Chatbots for Business

When you buy a new car, you decide which add-ons you want it to have. From an upgraded engine to a state-of-the-art navigation system, the add-ons you choose make your car more powerful and useful. When it comes to chatbots, the same idea applies.

You can [build a basic chatbot in five minutes](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xr8kmZ-oG_8&t=72s). But to make it more powerful, you’ll want to incorporate some add-ons. While many no-code add-ons are available for your Chatfuel bot (like artificial intelligence and [Zapier integrations](https://chatfuel.com/blog/a-marketing-automation-love-story-chatfuel-zapier)), there are developer solutions too. The JSON API for your (or your customer’s) chatbot is easily the most popular of these.

## What is the JSON API?

JSON stands for Javascript Object Notation. It’s one of the most commonly used formats for data transfer for fetching real-time data from one source, bringing it back, and displaying it in another.

Data in the JSON format is passed from place to place via a fetching tool called an API. So the JSON API lets you fetch dynamic data from another server for use in your bot.

Imagine an API, like a phone line, a way for two separate entities to communicate directly. Your bot picks up the phone, calls whatever server it needs data from, and asks for it. The server answers and gives the bot the data they need in JSON format.

In Chatfuel, the API for JSON takes the form of a plugin. Here’s a simple breakdown of how the free JSON API plugin works in a bot flow:

1. A user is chatting with your bot.

2. The user gets to the point in the flow where you’ve placed the JSON API plugin.

3. This plugin triggers your bot to use the API to ‘call’ the external server you specified when you set up the plugin. So it can receive the data it needs (in JSON format).

4. The bot brings that JSON-formatted data back to Chatfuel.

5. Chatfuel renders the data for the Messenger interface so the user can see or use it for some practical application in the flow.

Though it sounds time-consuming, all five steps happen more or less instantly. Note that coding knowledge is required to use the JSON API.

## Why use the JSON API in your bot?

Simply put: because it allows you to build better bots. Let’s say, for instance, that you have a Facebook chatbot that tells users the current price of 100 different stocks. This functionality is only possible to set up with the JSON API. You’d have to create 100 different blocks in your bot, one for each stock.

Next, you’d have to look up and manually enter each price. Plus, you’d have to manually change the price in your bot when any stock changes, even by a dollar. Since stock prices fluctuate constantly, your chatbot would be outdated.

But with the JSON API, your bot could fetch information from a server that has up-to-date stock prices at all times. That way, any time a user asks your bot for the price of a particular stock, they’ll be getting fresh data on the spot.

**With JSON API, your Messenger bots:**

- **Save your time.** It allows them to do even more on autopilot and with less manual work from you.

- **Are more helpful to users.** They can provide more relevant information to users than a chatbot that only deals with static data.

- **Provide a more personalized experience.** An everyday use for the JSON API is to fetch the current day or time in a certain time zone (like the user’s). That means it’s possible to personalize any user’s chatbot experience making it extra relevant and memorable.

To put JSON in even more concrete terms, let’s look at its key use cases for Facebook Messenger and Instagram.

## Top use cases for the JSON API

So you’re building a chatbot for your or your customer’s business. If you want to equip it to do any of the following tasks, use the JSON API. Let’s break it down by use cases for eCommerce, sales and marketing, advertising, and others.

### eCommerce

Once you integrate your eCommerce store with your Chatfuel bot, you can do things like:

- **Display your store’s real-time inventory.** Using a [product-recommendation chatbot](https://chatfuel.com/blog/whisky-brand-triples-conversion-rates-with-gift-recommendation-chatbot) for your eCommerce store? Imagine the user’s frustration if they went to your site to buy the suggested item and found it was out of stock. A prime JSON API example would be to use the API plugin to link directly to your inventory database. That way, the bot will only show available items.

- **Show up-to-date product images.** If you have a large inventory of products, manually uploading all the different photos for each to your bot would be seriously time-consuming. But, as another JSON API example, you could link your Facebook bot to your photo database. That way, whenever a user asks to view a specific product, the chatbot will show the latest photos from the database. This use case works great for displaying user-generated content that’s constantly changing and being updated, too.

- **Enforce a limited-time offer.** Imagine you’re running a short-term sale for your store. The JSON API can track the time, so your bot will stop offering the promotion once it has expired. You won’t have to manually delete those blocks in the bot when time is up, but customers won’t be able to redeem offers when they’re no longer valid.

### Sales and marketing

- **Add bot user information to your CRM or EMS**. Messenger chatbots make [excellent tools for lead generation](https://chatfuel.com/blog/marketing-agency-uses-messenger-bots-to-deliver-high-quality-leads-for-clients). So another answer to the question ‘what is JSON used for? ’ would be: sending that lead information directly to your third-party database. If you’re gathering email addresses, you can use the JSON API to send them right to your email marketing solution. If you’re gathering complete lead information for future follow-up, you can use the JSON API to send those details right to your CRM.

- **Display new content from your site in your bot.** Add JSON API to your chatbot to display the most recent posts from your blog or make the latest news articles available for them to browse. So that your bot can instantly fetch new content from your website and display it to users. Set up a WordPress JSON API if your content is hosted there, for example.

- **Let users schedule appointments**. You can use the JSON API to fetch information about your availability. Users can only book times that fall within your parameters. For example, you can set your available hours and days, make a mandatory buffer so appointments can’t be scheduled at short notice, and more. Then, of course, you can also use the API to link to your calendar so the user can actually schedule the appointment.

### Advertising

- **Use JSON API to connect your chatbot with your ads.** That way, you get even better results: generate more leads, collect and export their data, encourage them to purchase, and more. The reason is simple — your chatbot instantly communicates with people who click on your ads and shows interest in your brand and products.

### Other use cases

- **Share score updates for live sporting events**. The Golden State Warriors, a Chatfuel customer, did this for their fan chatbot. As a prime JSON API example, their bot fetches real-time scores for games in progress. That means users can view the most up-to-date news about the game at any time via the Facebook Messenger chatbot.

- **Display up-to-date stats for coronavirus infections**. Messenger bots have been used for this purpose since the COVID-19 pandemic began. They can connect to real-time information sources using the JSON API to display current infection rates for different cities or countries.

- **Offer current weather information**. Weather, API, JSON: three words on this topic that commonly go together. Suppose you want your Facebook bot to give up-to-date information about current weather and the latest forecasts. In that case, you can use a free weather API for JSON. Use the plugin in Chatfuel to link your bot to a weather database, so it can always return the most recent information to users.

## How to set up the JSON API in your chatbot

The instructions for setting up the JSON API in your Messenger chatbot vary widely based on what you’ll be using it for. Remember, this is a developer plugin that requires coding knowledge. ## The brand

The Famous Grouse is a Scottish whisky brand founded in 1896. Their blend is one of the most popular in the world, and they’ve been the best-selling whisky in Scotland for over 40 years. This year, they released a new product: a limited-edition gift box featuring three of their hard-to-get blends (Ruby Cask, Wine Cask, and Bourbon Cask). They hired The Leith Agency, a full-service marketing agency, to help them market and sell their new offering as a Father’s Day gift.

<figure><iframe allowfullscreen="" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/DAlWAujLjlQ"></iframe></figure>

## The problem

The team at [The Leith Marketing Agency](https://leith.co.uk) knew that selling the gift box would require a different approach than [The Famous Grouse](https://www.thefamousgrouse.com/en)’s typical campaigns. Normally, they target and speak to whisky drinkers with their marketing. This time, “we also needed to think about people who would be buying gifts for whisky drinkers,” explains Leith’s Head of Social Jamie McAdam. “This meant that they perhaps had less knowledge about whisky itself, the brand, or what we had to offer.”

So the team knew that product education had to be a key component of their strategy. But they also knew it had to take a more engaging form than “extra-long Facebook statuses,” in Jamie’s words. So instead, they created a series of [Facebook ads](https://chatfuel.com/blog/facebook-ads) for the gift box using [sequential retargeting](https://www.shopify.com/blog/facebook-ads-sequential-retargeting). “This allowed us to tell a longer story, building in more information about the product with each ad,” Jamie says.

While the ads worked well to tease the product to shoppers, “we wanted an opportunity for a more in-depth customer experience,” explains Jamie. “We wanted a place where people could learn specific product details and strengthen their affinity with the brand.”

‍

## The solution

The Leith team knew that this was the chance they had been waiting for. They’d been interested in trying out [conversational marketing for their clients](https://chatfuel.com/blog/6-reasons-marketing-agencies-should-offer-chatbot-services) for a while, and this opportunity “ticked all the right boxes” for their first go. “Both the client and our team were keen to explore how [a chatbot could act as a new and innovative solution](https://chatfuel.com/blog/9-reasons-your-ecommerce-business-needs-a-chatbot),” Jamie tells us.

“After some initial research,” he continues, “Chatfuel stood out as [the best option for this project.](https://docs.chatfuel.com/en/articles/3882031-chatfuel-for-agencies-and-creators) The platform itself is easy to manage, no code skills required, and the level of support offered was just what we needed to take this project to the next level.”

The team ended up crafting a version of a gift-recommendation chatbot to lead people who were shopping for Father’s Day gifts towards the new product. “By being more conversational \[with the ecommerce chatbot\],” Jamie explains, “we could guide people through what the offering was and help them make a purchase decision.”

Here’s how the bot works:

1. **The bot welcomes the user.** The chatbot [greets the user](https://chatfuel.com/blog/welcome-message-best-practices) and introduces itself as the Grouse, the whisky brand’s well-known and beloved icon. Its [friendly, charming persona](https://chatfuel.com/blog/chatbot-names) makes users feel both comfortable and intrigued. (The Leith team also made sure to break up the text, add pauses, and include visuals to make for a more natural, streamlined conversational design.)
2. **The bot confirms the user’s interest.** It asks if they need help finding the perfect Father’s Day gift.
3. **The bot begins a [product-recommendation flow](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dfmQvqtJN9Q).** When the user confirms that they’re looking for a Father’s Day gift, the chatbot guides them through a series of questions. “Although the ultimate goal is always the same—to sell the gift box,” Jamie explains, “the questions helped make a clearer case for why it would be a good gift for that user’s dad in particular.”
4. **The user makes a purchase.** Once the user is convinced that the gift box is the right choice for their Father’s Day gift, the Facebook Messenger chatbot sends them to the website to buy. Or, if they’re still unsure, they can choose to live chat with a human support agent instead. Either way, they’ll have traveled along the ecommerce sales funnel and will be likely to make a purchase from there.

## The recipe

The Leith team focused on these key tools and features to build the Messenger chatbot for The Famous Grouse:

### AI rules

([https://docs.chatfuel.com/en/articles/828883-keywords)AI](https://docs.chatfuel.com/en/articles/828883-keywords\)AI), or artificial intelligence, was key to the success of this Facebook chatbot. First, the Leith team created a few basic AI rules, including an option to return users to the start of the chat experience if anything “went wrong.” Then, they brainstormed other questions or comments users might send during the chat, like mentioning other whisky brands, “swearing/being cheeky,” and questions about the box itself or about shipping. They added AI rules so the bot could properly respond to all of these scenarios. After launch, they continued to watch out for where users were getting stuck and added more rules to remove those friction points.

<figure><iframe allowfullscreen="" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/F-lO4dAujjg"></iframe></figure>

### Live chat

The Leith team used the [live chat](https://docs.chatfuel.com/en/articles/849315-live-chat) feature as a sort of net to catch any users who may have otherwise fallen through the cracks. If a user completed the product-recommendation flow but had other questions or still wasn’t sure about buying, they had the option to then initiate a live chat session. From there, a human would take over to resolve their queries, so no sales opportunity would be lost and no user would be abandoned.

<figure><img src="https://storage.googleapis.com/chatfuel-cms-staging/pic/original_whisky_brand_triples_conversion_rates_with_gift_recommendation_chatbot_1_da7a43496d/original_whisky_brand_triples_conversion_rates_with_gift_recommendation_chatbot_1_da7a43496d.webp" loading="lazy" alt="" height="371" width="645" blurdataurl="data:image/png;base64,iVBORw0KGgoAAAANSUhEUgAAAAQAAAACCAIAAADwyuo0AAAACXBIWXMAAAsTAAALEwEAmpwYAAAAJUlEQVR4nAEaAOX/AOnn5dvb2/Py8tva2gAABBXMzM3k5OXQztD23RJGAueZNgAAAABJRU5ErkJggg==" placeholder="blur" srcset="https://storage.googleapis.com/chatfuel-cms-staging/pic/xs_whisky_brand_triples_conversion_rates_with_gift_recommendation_chatbot_1_da7a43496d/xs_whisky_brand_triples_conversion_rates_with_gift_recommendation_chatbot_1_da7a43496d.webp 300w, https://storage.googleapis.com/chatfuel-cms-staging/pic/sm_whisky_brand_triples_conversion_rates_with_gift_recommendation_chatbot_1_da7a43496d/sm_whisky_brand_triples_conversion_rates_with_gift_recommendation_chatbot_1_da7a43496d.webp 768w, https://storage.googleapis.com/chatfuel-cms-staging/pic/md_whisky_brand_triples_conversion_rates_with_gift_recommendation_chatbot_1_da7a43496d/md_whisky_brand_triples_conversion_rates_with_gift_recommendation_chatbot_1_da7a43496d.webp 1280w, https://storage.googleapis.com/chatfuel-cms-staging/pic/lg_whisky_brand_triples_conversion_rates_with_gift_recommendation_chatbot_1_da7a43496d/lg_whisky_brand_triples_conversion_rates_with_gift_recommendation_chatbot_1_da7a43496d.webp 1920w, https://storage.googleapis.com/chatfuel-cms-staging/pic/xl_whisky_brand_triples_conversion_rates_with_gift_recommendation_chatbot_1_da7a43496d/xl_whisky_brand_triples_conversion_rates_with_gift_recommendation_chatbot_1_da7a43496d.webp 645w"></figure>

### Click-to-Messenger ads

The team ran [**Click-to-Messenger ads**](https://chatfuel.com/blog/create-click-to-messenger-ads-to-drive-traffic-to-your-bot) to attract prospects to the Facebook chatbot. (This ad type appears in a user’s feed and directs them immediately to a conversation with the bot in Messenger.) “These ads meant less effort for users to take part, and they proved to be a much more effective way of acquiring new prospects on the media budget we had available,” says Jamie.

<figure><iframe allowfullscreen="" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/tjKqCie3IsA"></iframe></figure>

Another tool that was crucial to the success of The Famous Grouse’s chatbot: [excellent copy](https://youtu.be/ZIUTFnRyJZI). First, the Leith team’s copywriters made sure all the bot’s content [matched the voice and tone](https://chatfuel.com/blog/craft-a-brand-voice-that-converts) of the brand’s mascot, the Grouse itself. They created a user experience that was consistently warm, welcoming, and on-brand throughout.

Finally, the team also made sure to closely monitor the Facebook chatbot’s performance stats so they could iterate and optimize. Shortly after launch, “we could see where \[in the flow\] certain users were stopping,” Jamie explains. “So we implemented a flow that provided them with three new areas of information: price, shipping, and the box itself.” Following these edits, the conversion rate increased.

## The results

The detailed work the Leith team put into The Famous Grouse’s Messenger chatbot and its conversational commerce campaign paid off in a big way. It earned their client an **on-site conversion rate of 24%**. That means virtually a quarter of users who chatted with the bot ended up purchasing the gift box. (The shoppers who went from the bot to the website also spent the longest average time on the page.) Before the chatbot, the Facebook video ads the team created were earning 8% conversions at their peak. So when the chatbot marketing campaign **tripled the client’s conversion rates**compared to the ads, the Leith team knew they’d hit the jackpot.

These results “showed us that people who came to the website from the chatbot were much more informed about the product, what it offered, and how it worked, and were therefore more likely to purchase,” explains Jamie. The goal of using the chatbot for ecommerce product education was a definite success.

Lastly, we asked Jamie what his team has planned for future campaigns with the bot. “We’re very pleased with how it performed,” he tells us, “and we’re now looking at ways it can play an additional role alongside our social advertising campaigns.”

## Chatbot marketing success—on the rocks

The conversational marketing campaign for The Famous Grouse shows just how impactful online ecommerce chatbots can be for businesses. They’re an incredibly engaging way to educate shoppers about your products so they’re primed and ready to buy. The result: more sales for you (or your client)!

Whether you’re an ecommerce business owner or an agency with ecommerce clients, the key function of Chatfuel is to help you earn results like these.

Chatbot Triples Conversion for Whisky Brand

The secret to taking your business to the next level: marketing automation. Here's how to do it with Chatfuel + Zapier automation software.

Marketing automation love story: Chatfuel + Zapier

Here’s the story of MyDreamChat — a startup that created a Facebook Messenger mental health chatbot for dream analysis. It grew to over 12,000 users in the first five months with under $5,000 in marketing spend. It brings powerful therapy experience as part of a larger project to create a separate app for this purpose. Tackling the minimum viable product creation, they ended up using the Messenger chatbot practically and creatively.

## The brand helps to start your mental health improving journey

Sansan Fibri, the founder of the startup, has always believed that our dreams have the power to help us uncover and deal with emotional challenges. However, most of us need the proper guidance to start this mental-health journey. That’s where Sansan’s AI chatbot MyDreamChat comes in.

It’s a guided self-therapy tool that helps users analyze their dreams in a conversational, quiz-like format. The goal is to lead them towards a resolution at the subconscious level for more sound mental health.

While Sansan started on this concept in 2018, it’s become more relevant than ever in the COVID-19 era. Sansan and her team surveyed over 10,000 MyDreamChat users a few months into the pandemic. They found that 40% of customers used words like “feeling trapped,” “hopeless,” or “powerless” to describe their coronavirus-era dreams. But after dream analysis via this mental health chatbot, 82% of respondents reported gaining new insight, which led to feelings of hope and optimism.

## The iOS app for the MVP proved to be way too pricey

Sansan explains that “effective mindset change and lasting healing occurs when we become conscious of our unconscious patterns and triggers. Those drive 95% of our decision-making and behavior.” Dream analysis is an effective tool on this journey for mental health, which is why she founded a startup called [Wakefully](https://wakefully.io) in 2018.

However, to build the complete product she dreamed of, Sansan needed investors. And to attract investors, she knew she needed to start with a minimum viable product (MVP). The purpose of the MVP would be to validate market interest and cultivate a motivated and engaged core audience.

So she started by commissioning an iOS app for her MVP in 2018. But “it turned out to be an expensive user interface that was not really usable and most definitely not scalable,” Sansan shares, since she was doing all the analysis work behind the scenes.

After that experiment, Sansan knew she needed a cheaper and more automated solution for her true MVP. “That’s when I realized that the conversational nature of the app I envisioned and the Q&A in branching logic lend themselves pretty nicely to a chatbot,” — she says. “It seemed like a more affordable and scalable solution to test market interest. Thought at the time, I had no clue that I, the visionary/non-technical founder, would be able to build it myself!”

## Chatbot has it all

“In the past, I used lead quizzes that would send people to my landing page waitlist. No more! I saw how I could streamline the entire funnel: ad → quiz → landing → dream analysis using a Facebook bot.” She was sold when she learned that she could use chatbot marketing to drive traffic, capture leads, retarget, and deliver value. “Our entire value proposition, all in one chatbot!” says Sansan.

She turned to Chatfuel for this project right away. Sansan tells us: “In my research, Chatfuel kept coming up as the platform that can enable someone like me, lacking any coding skills, to build an awesome Messenger bot. Using just Chatfuel and its [videos](https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC1_z5c5UnMJ0waRJ8Bx1cFg) and [help docs](https://docs.chatfuel.com/en), I built and launched the first version of MyDreamChat in about two weeks. I continue to learn, grow, analyze, and iterate due to the vast amount of information and tools Chatfuel provides.”

Here’s how MyDreamChat chatbot for mental health works:

1. The user selects their dream type (being chased, falling, or feeling trapped).
2. They take a personalized quiz about the details of the dream they can remember and the feelings they associate with it.
3. The chatbot generates a personalized analysis of the user’s dream. The analysis explains what it “means” or symbolizes in the context of that person’s life experience.

“It delivers this dialogue using positive psychology to help reframe their thinking about this and other dreams in a therapeutic, healthier way,” explains Sansan.

## Satisfied customers and high conversion

Sansan originally built her Messenger chatbot as an MVP for her separate app. She intended the Messenger bot to be a temporary solution but now decided to continue using Chatfuel as the top of the funnel with her own app. “The experience is so optimal for customer acquisition,” she says.

This decision is based on the incredible results she’s seen with her chatbot for mental health and dream analysis so far. Take a look:

- The chatbot has an 82% user satisfaction rating based on exit polls seamlessly integrated into the chat after an analysis.
- The average engagement rate for users is 3 times more in the first week.
- 30% of users share the bot, and 25% of page likers share MyDreamChat ads, making for a virality factor potential of 50%.
- Sansan and her team identify 53% of users as highly likely to convert (to download their separate app) and 33.5% as likely to convert to paid subscribers in the app.

MyDreamChat illustrates how the use cases for Messenger chatbots are practically infinite. Most any scenario that would benefit from a personalized, back-and-forth conversation can be created in Messenger. It’s not just e-commerce retailers or brick-and-mortar businesses. As you can see, chatbots that provide mental health care or guidance work incredibly well in Messenger. They are using no-code technology to help people live better. We love to see it!

Wakefully is currently offering a promotion to their Facebook chatbot subscribers: a pre-order discount on membership once their complete, separate app is released.
