Over Q1 of 2020, as the coronavirus morphed into a pandemic, [Facebook reported](https://investor.fb.com/investor-news/press-release-details/2020/Facebook-Reports-First-Quarter-2020-Results/default.aspx) “a record number of people using \[their\] services.” People worldwide have been quarantined at home, spending lots of time scrolling social media for both news and entertainment.

COVID-19 has affected different ecommerce niches and their Facebook ads in different ways. But there’s no denying that there are more eyes on Facebook feeds than ever. If you’ve got the resources to experiment with ads to (ethically) boost your ecommerce sales right now, read on! Jason Smith knows a thing or two about Facebook ad sales funnels. (He turned $30,000 into more than $170,000 for his small business customers)

Here’s a summary of his tried-and-true strategy for using Facebook ads to ignite your ecommerce store’s sales, whether you’re selling on Shopify, WooCommerce, or any other major ecommerce platform. It all begins and ends with this master chart.

## The two sections of the Facebook ads funnel

As you can see on the far left side of the chart above, Jason divides the ecommerce funnel into two parts based on how much of your budget you should spend on each.

1. **Prospecting: the upper part of the funnel.** According to Jason, ads for this part of the sales funnel should account for 60-90% of your budget. They’re intended for **prospecting:** getting the attention of people who have had little to no interaction with your page yet, but that fit the characteristics of prospects you want to target.

2. **Retargeting: the lower part of the funnel.** The ads in this section of the funnel should account for 10-40% of your ads budget. They’re meant for **retargeting:** recapturing the attention of lukewarm or even hot leads who have had some interaction with your page. Note that retargeting isn’t a process for small budgets, Jason explains. If you’re only spending $1k on ads total, for example, you likely won’t have enough users to successfully retarget.

## Prospecting

In this stage of your Facebook ad strategy, Jason recommends focusing on:

- dynamic ads

- Lookalikes/narrow interests

### Dynamic ads

Dynamic ads (catalog sales) on Facebook let you pull data from a specific product catalog on your ecommerce site and automatically insert it into ads. The Facebook ad will either showcase your most popular products, or product (s) a particular user viewed or even added to their cart. You’ll save time this way, since you don’t have to come up with the ad creative.

There are two ad-set targeting options Jason recommends for ecommerce shops here. (You should use the *purchase conversion* objective for both.)

1. **The broad audience.** In this case, you don’t target anyone in particular. Instead, you let your website’s [Facebook Pixel do](https://www.facebook.com/business/help/952192354843755?id=1205376682832142) that for you based on the purchase data it has gathered.

2. **Interests.** In this case, you target users with specific interests. And contrary to popular belief, the best practice is actually to clump all of your interests together in one campaign. The Facebook system works better with the data this way, according to Jason, and it’ll target more people.

### Tips on improving your dynamic ads

- **Exclude the right people.** Audience exclusion is an important factor in any successful Facebook ad campaign. For dynamic ads, you want to exclude anyone that could overlap with your next ad-set targeting. That means excluding those who have interacted with your Facebook page or your [click-to-Messenger ads](https://youtu.be/v2F1uXt2AlQ) in the last 30 days. You will target these people later on down the funnel. (You can see all the audience exclusions for each step in Jason’s chart above).

- **Choose automatic placements.** Jason recommends always using *Automatic placements* when setting up your ads, instead of selecting manual placements on only Facebook or only Instagram. With automatic placements, your ads will appear for users on both platforms, based on their behavior. It makes your ads more likely to be seen by the right people.

- **Choose the right campaign goal.** You’re after conversions, so *Conversion*s should always be the campaign goal you choose for these ads. Otherwise, Facebook will show your ad to users who may click and engage with it, but aren’t necessarily likely to convert.

- **Run one campaign with two ad sets.** Run an ad set for the broad audience and one for the interest-based audience. It’ll help you learn how different creatives perform for different groups of users. (Remember: Make sure to exclude the targeted audience of one set from the other set’s targeting, and vice versa. Otherwise, you risk fatiguing users with too many ads.)

### Lookalikes/narrow interests

An ad targeted to a [Lookalike audience](https://www.facebook.com/business/help/164749007013531?id=401668390442328) means it’ll reach users who are similar to your existing highest-value customers. Use purchase-event data from your Facebook Pixel for your Lookalike audiences.

💡**Tip**: Want to create a Lookalike audience based on your most valuable chatbot users? Export user data from the [People tab](https://docs.chatfuel.com/en/articles/1575151-people-tab) to Facebook Ads Manager in one click with Chatfuel’s Segment Sync feature.

Create four different Lookalike audiences and a narrow interest-based audience within your campaign. Jason shares that your Lookalike audiences should be based on the following percent of your highest value customers:

- 10%,

- 5%,

- 3%,

- 1%.

Follow the same rule you followed for dynamic ads: Exclude the targeted audience of one set from the other set’s targeting, and vice versa. You should also exclude customers who have purchased from you in the last 30 days. The reason behind both tactics is to avoid irritating users with too many ads from you.

### Tips on improving your Lookalike and narrow-interest ads

- **Trim the fat.** When it comes to exclusions, think about how long your product lasts. Make sure to exclude customers who have already purchased from you and won’t need more of your product yet. Also exclude anyone who has already viewed or interacted with your page. That way, you don’t risk wasting ad dollars and annoying users by showing them ads that don’t fit where they’re at in the customer lifecycle. The chart at the beginning of this article will tell you which people to exclude (look to the *Audience exclusions* column).

- **Experiment with the creative format.** As Jason says, “Facebook is a testing platform.” Experiment with carousels, single-image ads, video ads, etc. to see what works best.

## Retargeting

In this stage of your Facebook ad strategy, you’re doubling down on the warm users who have already had some kind of interaction with your page. Jason recommends focusing on static and dynamic retargeting.

### Static retargeting

With static retargeting, you want to reach people who aren’t yet hot leads, but aren’t cold either. That means you’re looking to target those who have viewed or engaged with your page in the last 30 days. These users know who you are, but maybe haven’t seen a specific product of yours yet. That’s why this is a great time to use a specific catalog of your popular products in carousel form.

💡**Tip:** Static retargeting can also take the form of a [sponsored message](https://chatfuel.com/blog/sponsored-messages-guide-to-reengaging-chatbot-subscribers). If you go this route, make sure your chatbot is equipped to sell from there. Optimize your [Welcome Message](https://chatfuel.com/blog/welcome-message-best-practices) and set up your bot to [get conversions](https://chatfuel.com/blog/whisky-brand-triples-conversion-rates-with-gift-recommendation-chatbot).

#### Tips on improving your static retargeting

- **Don’t have too many ad sets per campaign.** The best practice is to have between four and six ads per ad set active at one time. More than that may confuse the system, says Jason. Monitor your ads closely. If any aren’t performing well, you can turn them off and replace them with new ones you want to test.

- **Exclude the right people.** Again, look to the image at the start of this article for which audiences you should include from your static retargeting ads.

### Dynamic retargeting

Dynamic retargeting ads are personalized. If a user views a product or adds it to their cart on your site and then abandons it, a dynamic retargeting ad will show them that specific product again.

<figure><img srcset="https://storage.googleapis.com/chatfuel-cms-staging/pic/xs_the_secret_recipe_for_optimizing_your_ecommerce_funnel_with_facebook_ads_3_b70632b03e/xs_the_secret_recipe_for_optimizing_your_ecommerce_funnel_with_facebook_ads_3_b70632b03e.webp 300w, https://storage.googleapis.com/chatfuel-cms-staging/pic/sm_the_secret_recipe_for_optimizing_your_ecommerce_funnel_with_facebook_ads_3_b70632b03e/sm_the_secret_recipe_for_optimizing_your_ecommerce_funnel_with_facebook_ads_3_b70632b03e.webp 768w, https://storage.googleapis.com/chatfuel-cms-staging/pic/md_the_secret_recipe_for_optimizing_your_ecommerce_funnel_with_facebook_ads_3_b70632b03e/md_the_secret_recipe_for_optimizing_your_ecommerce_funnel_with_facebook_ads_3_b70632b03e.webp 1280w, https://storage.googleapis.com/chatfuel-cms-staging/pic/lg_the_secret_recipe_for_optimizing_your_ecommerce_funnel_with_facebook_ads_3_b70632b03e/lg_the_secret_recipe_for_optimizing_your_ecommerce_funnel_with_facebook_ads_3_b70632b03e.webp 1920w, https://storage.googleapis.com/chatfuel-cms-staging/pic/xl_the_secret_recipe_for_optimizing_your_ecommerce_funnel_with_facebook_ads_3_b70632b03e/xl_the_secret_recipe_for_optimizing_your_ecommerce_funnel_with_facebook_ads_3_b70632b03e.webp 1920w" width="1920" height="1080" src="https://storage.googleapis.com/chatfuel-cms-staging/pic/original_the_secret_recipe_for_optimizing_your_ecommerce_funnel_with_facebook_ads_3_b70632b03e/original_the_secret_recipe_for_optimizing_your_ecommerce_funnel_with_facebook_ads_3_b70632b03e.webp" alt="https://s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com/secure.notion-static.com/a8f929c3-8167-4add-97b0-6667303969ff/Green_and_Black_Simple_Sales_Marketing_Presentation_(2).png"><figcaption>Dynamic retargeting ads show a product(s) the user has already viewed on your site to entice them to come back and buy.</figcaption></figure>

Jason recommends targeting people who:

- viewed one of your products in the last 60 or 90 days

- viewed one of your products in the last seven days (however, you may want to skip this one if you’re not going to spend enough to create substantial traffic for this)

- added one of your products to their cart in the last seven days

- purchased one of your products (so that you can to upsell or cross-sell)

#### Tip on improving your dynamic retargeting ads

- **Listen to Facebook.** Facebook AdsManager will tell you if you have the audience for a particular ad set or not. Pay attention to those notifications. (And remember, as with the others, to exclude the right audiences so you don’t show too many ads to any one group.)

## Facebook ads + Chatfuel

One last tip: You can harness the power of your Chatfuel bot to make the Facebook ad campaigns for your ecommerce company even more effective. We already mentioned sending data from the [*People* tab](https://docs.chatfuel.com/en/articles/1575151-people-tab) to Facebook Ads Manager with Segment Sync to improve your targeting. You should also know about the Click-to-Messenger Ads Entry Point. It’s the easiest way to link ads to your Chatfuel bot.

Optimize Your Ecommerce Funnel with Facebook Ads

A chatbot is your business’s Swiss Army knife: a multi-purpose tool that can help you with all kinds of different tasks and goals. Looking to cut costs, save time, boost sales, or delight customers? A Messenger chatbot can help with all four. And the best part is: You don’t need to be a tech expert or have coding knowledge to build one! That’s what no-code tools like Chatfuel are for. So allow us to dig a little deeper into the question of why your business needs a chatbot. Your business can benefit from chatbot technology in the following nine ways, because bots can help you…

## Cut business costs

*What company would turn down an easy opportunity to cut expenses? A Messenger chatbot for your business can help do this in two key ways.*

### 1\. Qualify leads automatically to reduce operational costs

Simply by asking questions in its natural, conversational style, a chatbot can automatically sort prospective customers into categories. They can narrow down which prospects would be a good fit for your services, for example. Or, they could separate out those who seem more prepared to buy your products than others. Check out these real-world examples of Chatfuel users who have found success with their lead qualification chatbots:

- A car dealership saw a [3.5x increase in qualified leads](https://chatfuel.com/blog/nissan-sells-cars-using-messenger-bot) and a 10x increase in sales in the first month, thanks to a bot that qualifies test-drive leads

- An astrology brand was able to [cut costs by $25,000/month](https://chatfuel.com/blog/cut-operational-costs-with-messenger-bot) and reduce their staff by over half once they launched a chatbot to qualify leads, since their employees no longer had to waste time talking to unqualified prospects.

### 2\. Improve return on ad spend

Let’s say you run a Facebook ad that directs users to your ecommerce store, your [restaurant’s](https://chatfuel.com/blog/restaurant-chatbot) menu, or your agency’s website. Once the user arrives, they’re on their own to browse, and *hopefully* convert. But direct them to a chatbot on Messenger instead, and they’ll get personalized guidance right down the sales funnel. Your bot can [recommend products](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dfmQvqtJN9Q) in your store, answer questions about your food delivery, or qualify leads for your marketing agency’s services. The result? More conversions and a better ROAS for you.

Once there, your bot can move prospects down the sales funnel towards a conversion.</figcaption></figure>

## Save time

*The less time your employees have to spend on repetitive questions and tasks, the more time they’ll have for other value-adding projects. Here’s why you should consider chatbots as a business solution for saving time.*

### 3\. Automate your overflowing inbox

Are you or your staff spending countless hours responding to Facebook messages from prospects and customers? Good news: Chatbots and customer service are a match made in heaven. In fact, a well-built Messenger chatbot can answer [up to 80% of routine questions](https://www.invespcro.com/blog/chatbots-customer-service/).

In a couple of hours (and with no coding involved!), you can [build a chatbot to answer FAQs](https://chatfuel.com/blog/chatbot-for-customer-service/) instantly, 24/7. (You can also use a no-code integration to add AI to your chatbot to make it even better at answering user questions!) See for yourself: Chatfuel client HelloFresh built a customer support chatbot and [cut their response time by 76%](https://chatfuel.com/blog/hellofresh-reduces-support-wait-times-with-chatfuel-messenger-bot)! Customer satisfaction went up, and HelloFresh’s support team now has more time to focus on other tasks.

## Boost conversions and sales

Need another reason to adopt a chatbot for your business? We’ve got two words for you: more sales.

### 5\. Gather valuable lead information

Your business needs a chatbot if you rely on leads for revenue! (For example: [Chatbots for marketing agencies](https://chatfuel.com/blog/marketing-agency-uses-messenger-bots-to-deliver-high-quality-leads-for-clients) and chatbots for real estate brokers are especially popular use cases.) First, bring users to your bot from your website or Facebook ads. Then, your chatbot can qualify them and gather contact information in a casual, conversational way. It can ask for their zip code, job title, or whatever data would be useful for your business. Then, with the Save User Email and Phone Number plugins, the user can share their contact information with the chatbot in one click.

### 6\. Convert followers and website visitors into customers

Businesses can use chatbots to turn lukewarm leads into a warm leads or even customers. Meet prospects where they are, and use your chatbot to guide them towards a conversion. For example, you could:

- **Add your chatbot to your website.** Don’t leave visitors to browse your products or services alone! Have your friendly [chatbot pop up on your website](https://chatfuel.com/blog/add-a-messenger-chatbot-to-your-website) and offer to answer their questions, make a recommendation, or guide them to the right resources. Take the case of a large English university, for example. They added their Chatfuel bot to their website to generate and qualify leads and doubled their conversion rate, facilitating $3.1 million in new enrollments in one day!

- **Set your chatbot to respond to Facebook comments.** The Comments Autoreply Entry Point in Chatfuel makes this a breeze. You can have your Messenger chatbot respond to comments on every post or only one post, and all comments or just those that contain keywords. Once this feature is set up, your bot will send commenters a message instantly and tell them more about your contest, offer, promotion, product, etc. Just look at what Chatfuel client DECEN Muebles did with this tool: They got almost [4,000 qualified leads](https://chatfuel.com/blog/decen-baby-brand-generates-80-of-total-sales-with-messenger-bot) from a single post!

<figure><img srcset="https://storage.googleapis.com/chatfuel-cms-staging/pic/xs_top_9_reasons_your_business_needs_a_chatbot_3_4cd5ebb433/xs_top_9_reasons_your_business_needs_a_chatbot_3_4cd5ebb433.webp 300w, https://storage.googleapis.com/chatfuel-cms-staging/pic/sm_top_9_reasons_your_business_needs_a_chatbot_3_4cd5ebb433/sm_top_9_reasons_your_business_needs_a_chatbot_3_4cd5ebb433.webp 768w, https://storage.googleapis.com/chatfuel-cms-staging/pic/md_top_9_reasons_your_business_needs_a_chatbot_3_4cd5ebb433/md_top_9_reasons_your_business_needs_a_chatbot_3_4cd5ebb433.webp 1280w, https://storage.googleapis.com/chatfuel-cms-staging/pic/lg_top_9_reasons_your_business_needs_a_chatbot_3_4cd5ebb433/lg_top_9_reasons_your_business_needs_a_chatbot_3_4cd5ebb433.webp 1920w, https://storage.googleapis.com/chatfuel-cms-staging/pic/xl_top_9_reasons_your_business_needs_a_chatbot_3_4cd5ebb433/xl_top_9_reasons_your_business_needs_a_chatbot_3_4cd5ebb433.webp 940w" width="940" height="788" src="https://storage.googleapis.com/chatfuel-cms-staging/pic/original_top_9_reasons_your_business_needs_a_chatbot_3_4cd5ebb433/original_top_9_reasons_your_business_needs_a_chatbot_3_4cd5ebb433.webp" alt="generate leads"><figcaption>It takes just a few clicks to set your bot to automatically reply to comments on your Facebook posts.</figcaption></figure>

### 7\. Gather key customer data

The more you know about your audience, the more effectively you can sell to them. Lucky for marketers, chatbots make excellent data-gathering tools. You can set your chatbot to save the data it collects from users via its back-and-forth, conversational style. The data will be stored in Chatfuel in the form of user attributes, which are like tags. From there, you can:

- View and export all user data from the [*People* tab](https://docs.chatfuel.com/en/articles/1575151-people-tab) in Chatfuel.

- Create user segments in the *People* tab, and sync them to Facebook Ads Manager in one click. Then, use the data to create Lookalike audiences to reach valuable new prospects, or custom audiences to reengage existing users.

- Use data from customer actions in your bot to visualize your chatbot sales funnel. (The Send Analytics Events plugin makes it easy.) Then, you’ll be able to clearly see if there are any drop-off points in your flow, and make adjustments to maximize conversions.

<figure><img srcset="https://storage.googleapis.com/chatfuel-cms-staging/pic/xs_top_9_reasons_your_business_needs_a_chatbot_4_b75fae8182/xs_top_9_reasons_your_business_needs_a_chatbot_4_b75fae8182.webp 300w, https://storage.googleapis.com/chatfuel-cms-staging/pic/sm_top_9_reasons_your_business_needs_a_chatbot_4_b75fae8182/sm_top_9_reasons_your_business_needs_a_chatbot_4_b75fae8182.webp 768w, https://storage.googleapis.com/chatfuel-cms-staging/pic/md_top_9_reasons_your_business_needs_a_chatbot_4_b75fae8182/md_top_9_reasons_your_business_needs_a_chatbot_4_b75fae8182.webp 1280w, https://storage.googleapis.com/chatfuel-cms-staging/pic/lg_top_9_reasons_your_business_needs_a_chatbot_4_b75fae8182/lg_top_9_reasons_your_business_needs_a_chatbot_4_b75fae8182.webp 1920w, https://storage.googleapis.com/chatfuel-cms-staging/pic/xl_top_9_reasons_your_business_needs_a_chatbot_4_b75fae8182/xl_top_9_reasons_your_business_needs_a_chatbot_4_b75fae8182.webp 2000w" width="2000" height="676" src="https://storage.googleapis.com/chatfuel-cms-staging/pic/original_top_9_reasons_your_business_needs_a_chatbot_4_b75fae8182/original_top_9_reasons_your_business_needs_a_chatbot_4_b75fae8182.webp" alt="funnel conversion"><figcaption>Use the Send Analytics Events to Facebook plugin to visualize your chatbot's sales funnel.</figcaption></figure>

## Create a dazzling customer experience

Finally, a chatbot for your business can be the “wow factor” that delights users and keeps them coming back to your brand for more.

### 8\. Personalize the experience

It’s flattering when someone you’ve met before remembers details about you. It shows you that they were truly listening to what you had to say. That’s exactly the feeling your chatbot can give your audience. Your bot can incorporate two types of user data to personalize the conversation:

- **Data from their Facebook profile.** Chatbots on Facebook Messenger have access to a user’s basic profile details. That means that—without asking for the information—your chatbot can greet prospects by name, or customize messages by their location or time zone.

- **Data from past conversations.** Chatbots can store data from previous chats as attributes, and use those to customize future conversations. A chatbot could tell the user about new products related to one they showed interest in last time. Or, a chatbot could show locations or shipping availability for a user’s specific area based on the zip code they shared in a past conversation.

Personalization make users feel seen and special, which helps build brand trust. Plus, [80% of users say personalized experiences](https://us.epsilon.com/pressroom/new-epsilon-research-indicates-80-of-consumers-are-more-likely-to-make-a-purchase-when-brands-offer-personalized-experiences) make them more likely to buy. That means this feature of Messenger chatbots can benefit your bottom line, too.

Top 9 reasons your business needs a chatbot

Ever heard of chatvertising? It’s the key to getting more sales for your business in the modern marketing landscape.Chatvertising refers to digital ads that spark conversation between your brand and consumers.

If your brand has a great Messenger bot, you’ve already laid the groundwork for these meaningful conversations. But how do you “spark” them? How do you get them started? What tools can you use to bring new users to your bot, so it can engage them and drive conversions?

Though there’s more than one way, running click-to-Messenger ads on Facebook is your best option for fast, effective results.

Click-to-Messenger ads can be placed wherever any other [type of Facebook ad](https://chatfuel.com/blog/the-secret-recipe-for-optimizing-your-ecommerce-funnel-with-facebook-ads) can appear, including News Feeds, columns, Stories, and even on Instagram. When a user clicks the ad, they’ll be redirected from the Facebook or Instagram app to the Messenger app. They’ll be brought directly to a conversation with your brand, which your bot will immediately initiate.

## How to set up click-to-Messenger ads for your Chatfuel bot

If you’ve already created your click-to-Messenger ad in Facebook, skip to the next section. If not, follow these instructions to set up the ad in Facebook Ads Manager:

1. Choose the *Messages* objective for your new ad. Give it a name too, so you can easily find it in Chatfuel later.

2. Choose *Messenger* under *Message Destination*, and keep *Click to Messenger*selected in the drop-down.

3. Choose your audience according to your business’s unique goals. (You’ll find more on creating custom and Lookalike audiences in the next section of this guide.)

4. Choose *Automatic Placements*. Or, if you want this ad to show on Instagram too, you can use *Manual Placements.* On the one hand, being [redirected from Instagram to Messenger](https://chatfuel.com/blog/use-instagram-ads-to-bring-users-to-your-dms-or-your-messenger-bot) may be more jarring to users. On the other, Instagram has a valuable audience of over one billion users, most of whom belong to younger demographics. It’s up to you to decide whether this placement makes sense for your brand (or you can split-test to find out).

5. Choose your desired budget and schedule for the ad.

6. In the *Identity* section, make sure that your ad will come from the same Facebook page that your bot is linked to in Chatfuel.

7. Next, design your ad creative. (Find tips in the next section of this guide.)

8. In the *Messenger Setup* section, choose the *Start Conversations* option and click **Create.**

9. In the window that appears, we recommend choosing buttons or quick replies under *Customer Actions*.

10. In the same window, customize the greeting. This is the first message users will see from you in Facebook Messenger, so make it engaging!

11. Click **Finish**. There’s no need to set up your buttons or quick replies in this final window; you’ll do this in Chatfuel. Just click **Confirm** to submit your ad to Facebook for review.

## Best practices for click-to-Messenger ads

The ad creative you choose depends on what works best for your industry, and the advertising goals for your unique business. That being said, there are a few general best practices for “chatvertising” that apply to any brand.

- **Target carefully**. The best way to maximize return on ad spend and minimize conversion costs is through proper ad targeting. You can advertise to custom audiences (based on existing customer lists) or Lookalike audiences (to reach new prospects similar to your most valuable users). Get all the data you need to create these in Ads Manager from the [*People* tab](https://docs.chatfuel.com/en/articles/1575151-people-tab) in Chatfuel. Use Segment Sync to send this data to Facebook in one click. You can also create custom audiences based on actions users have taken in your bot using our Send Analytics Events to Facebook plugin. *(Note that custom audiences aren’t available for some European-based pages. - **Mention the word *Messenger* in the ad copy.** When users click your ad on mobile (and [94% of them will](https://sproutsocial.com/insights/facebook-stats-for-marketers/)), they’ll be redirected from the Facebook app to the Messenger app automatically. By mentioning Messenger in the copy (i.e. *Connect with us in Messenger to claim your 25%-off coupon!*), you remind users of what to expect. That way, the app switch won’t be as disorienting and fewer users will abandon the process after being redirected.

- **Use emoji in the ad copy**. It’s not just because emoji can make an ad more eye-catching. It’s also because they can help you draw attention to the call-to-action button you want users to click (*Send Message*). Emoji provide a clear, visual way to draw people to the next step.

## Optimizing for the double opt-in

Once a user clicks on your ad, they’re only halfway to converting. To become a bot subscriber (a user that’s reachable by your bot), they also have to respond to your chatbot’s initial message once they arrive in Facebook Messenger.

Here’s the challenge: There’s a 50% average drop-off rate between these two steps. That’s why it’s crucial to optimize those first messages from your bot to make it easy, enticing, and rewarding for users to engage. Here are some tips for getting users to interact once they arrive at your bot.

### Choose the initial-response options wisely

You *need* users to respond to your bot’s first message. To improve your odds, we recommend using buttons instead of quick replies. Sometimes quick replies don’t render properly on mobile, so buttons are generally the safer bet. Plus, buttons don’t disappear when your bot sends its next message, making it easier for the user to follow the conversation as it progresses.

We also suggest getting creative with the button copy. *Get Started* is a popular choice, but isn’t very engaging. Using a custom message is more effective—and using two is even better! A bot that offers two welcome-button choices generates 5x higher first-engagement rates.

### Incorporate emoji and GIFs into the messages

First, people already use the Messenger app from Facebook to chat with family and friends. Creating this same kind of intimate, casual atmosphere with [emoji and GIFs](#) can help encourage users to engage. Plus, these elements add color and motion to the conversation. They help catch a user’s eye, and they make your bot and your brand seem more approachable and human. Just make sure any that you use are appropriate for your brand voice and tone.

<figure><img width="872" height="732" src="https://storage.googleapis.com/chatfuel-cms-staging/pic/create_click_to_messenger_ads_to_drive_traffic_to_your_bot_4_0405570abf/create_click_to_messenger_ads_to_drive_traffic_to_your_bot_4_0405570abf.gif" alt=""><figcaption>Include GIFs and emoji if appropriate for your brand. They can help draw the eye and encourage the user to engage.</figcaption></figure>

### Keep the conversation flowing with “this or that” questions

It’s your responsibility to design a chatbot that keeps the conversation going. Don’t expect users to take the initiative! That’s why having your bot ask engaging questions is so important. In fact, “this or that” questions have been shown to double initial chatbot engagement rates. So don’t just keep sending block after block of text from your bot. Remember that it’s a two-way conversation. Offer the user response options often so they can easily participate in the dialogue.

## Gather leads and boost sales with click-to-Messenger ads

One click to Messenger and one click to engage with the bot, and you’ve got a new lead for your business. Click-to-Messenger ads are the most effective way to advertise on Facebook to get new users for your chatbot. Once they’re there, your bot can nurture these leads and move them down the funnel towards a conversion.

Instagram Ads: Drive Users to DMs & Messenger Bot

A great product attracts people. And it the support team gets more overwhelmed with a high customer flow. When it comes to e-commerce, the pressure might be even higher because consumers can quickly ask a question and expect a quick response. And if they don’t get it, most likely, they’ll leave. No matter how great the product is.

[3D Mats](https://shop.3dmats.com) is a Taiwanese e-commerce retailer that faced this problem. They design and sell car accessories such as floor mats, sunshades, and roof racks, focusing on constantly innovating and releasing high-quality items for their customers. Looking for a solution, 3D Mats hired GoSky AI agency to build a chatbot for their brand. The bot produced such excellent results for 3D Mats that it won second prize in our 2019 E-commerce Chatbot Competition. Here are a few metrics:

- The yearly average return on ad spend (ROAS) blasts to 999%.
- 47% of customers purchase other recommended products.
- The repurchase rate has climbed to 30%.

Let’s have a look at their journey.

## Busy support team, ineffective both marketing and ads

The 3D Mats support agents spent most of their time answering repetitive common questions. For example, consumers asked about the products, delivery details, and other things that are called FAQs. Of course, answering those is essential, but that meant less time to respond to more complex inquiries, plus longer waiting time for all customers.

Despite communicating with consumers a lot, the 3D Mats team didn’t have a good feel for who their ideal customer was. So, it was hard for them to market effectively. Not understanding their target audience meant their Facebook ads weren’t too successful. Their retargeting ads were getting pricey, even though they weren’t doing much to increase sales for their store.

All these problems took the 3D Mats team to the point where they needed an innovative but inexpensive solution. So, they decided to try automation.

## One chatbot solves three problems

Initially, the GoSky team realized that all these problems were connected. So, they set up a strategy for solving them all and implemented it in their chatbot for 3D Mats. “Chatfuel Dashboard is very stable and trust-worthy. It brings an enjoyable user experience to the bot builder and the bot users, ” Dora Tseng from GoSky AI explains why they chose Chatfuel for this and other projects.

Let’s look at how the GoSky team broke down the task into three steps and used powerful Chatfuel tools and plugins for each problem.

### 1\. Automating FAQs and product recommendation

3D Mats shared that most of the FAQs they receive from the comments. So, the GoSky team used a Comments Autoreply feature in their Chatfuel automation. A chatbot can send a private message to all commenters or only those who used a specific keyword in their comment. This rule can be applied to all posts or only particular ones. If you already use Chatfuel automation, you can set the Comments Autoreply feature and check the FAQ templates in your [Dashboard](https://dashboard.chatfuel.com).

### 2\. Understanding the audience

[Click-to-Messenger ads](https://chatfuel.com/blog/create-click-to-messenger-ads-to-drive-traffic-to-your-bot). Tseng calls this feature and chatbots “a perfect match because they lead right to the chatbot, avoiding necessary redirect.” GoSky AI used bot links to make this process even smoother. For example, when users click a product ad, a link takes them to that part of the bot containing information about that product. That way, users find what they need in one click, so conversion rates increase.

[Save to Google Sheets plugin.](https://docs.chatfuel.com/en/articles/2708726-export-data-from-chatfuel-to-google-sheets) The 3D Mats chatbot quizzes users about their car and needs. It automatically exports their answers to a Google Sheet. A human agent then checks the responses, finds the right product for the user’s car, and sends them the store link to it via Live Chat. The GoSky team plans to automate the whole product recommendation process to save even more time.

### 3\. Improving the ad campaigns

[Lookalike audiences](https://docs.chatfuel.com/en/articles/1575719-how-to-create-facebook-and-instagram-ads). On Facebook, you can target new people who are most likely to be interested in your ad — and most likely to convert. Chatfuel users have access to this data in the People tab. They can export it to Facebook and use it in their ads.

A/B Test plugin. GoSky AI used this feature for the brand’s holiday campaign to find the most effective way to send a promo code to users. They tried three options: sending it immediately, sending it later via [sequences](https://docs.chatfuel.com/en/articles/908868-sequences), and sharing it with a countdown timer. The results showed that the Sequence flow worked best, as it got them the most conversions. They used that method for all future users and **increased monthly sales by 29%**!

## Beyond expectations

Eventually, the 3D Mats team had much more time because the automation was now instantly responding to common questions. Once a Chatfuel bot starts a conversation with a new user, it saves their profile information in the [People tab](https://docs.chatfuel.com/en/articles/1575151-people-tab). The more new users the 3D Mats chatbot interacted with, the more data the team had to analyze. That insight allowed them to solve their second problem. Eventually, 3D Mats was able to run better ads and produce more relevant content, helping solve the third problem. The bot GoSky built help solved 3D Mats’ problems and accomplish their goals:

1. The chatbot’s FAQs function and quiz feature have **reduced repetitive inquiries by 70%**. Once they automate the entire process, GoSky estimates that number will jump to 95%! The 3D Mats support team already has much more time to spend on other tasks, and that time will only increase.
2. Suggesting products has been a super effective function of the bot, too. 47% of customers now also purchase other recommended products. 3D Mats’ **repurchase rate has climbed to 30%**. The bot personalizes the service and [keeps customers coming back](https://chatfuel.com/blog/customer-loyalty-chatbot).
3. The audience data that the 3D Mats chatbot gathered gave their Facebook ad performance a significant boost. Their yearly average return on ad spend **(ROAS) is now 999%**.

## 1.No contact info for your audience

### Chatfuel’s Rx: The Save User Phone Number and Save User Email plugins

We all know that the most successful sales and marketing campaigns take place across multiple channels. It’s no different for brands that use Messenger bots. So after a prospect or customer engages with your [ecommerce chatbot](https://chatfuel.com/blog/best-ecommerce-chatbots-that-can-boost-your-business/), how can you reach them on other platforms? Try the [Save User Phone Number and Save User Email plugins](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EeEEHU1nfjk&feature=youtu.be). They’ll let you easily gather subscriber contact info so you can reach out to them [via SMS](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fnjvvHS5LK4) or email too.

These plugins will automatically populate quick replies that contain the user’s contact information. It’ll pull it directly from their Facebook account, so there’s no need for the user to manually type anything. They just have to confirm the number or email your bot suggests by tapping it, and voilà! You’ve captured the necessary information in a quick, frictionless way.

## 2.Overwhelming Facebook Messenger inbox

### Chatfuel’s Rx: The Save to Google Sheets plugin

You know the saying, “Cluttered desk, cluttered mind?” It’s the same with your Facebook Messenger inbox. There’s no native way to easily sort through messages there. As a result, you may be missing opportunities to communicate with prospects and customers.

For example, let’s say you’re running a giveaway. You announce that users must message your bot to enter. The promotion generates a lot of buzz and gets hundreds or even thousands of entrants. How are you going to sort through all the messages then and pick a winner? Easy. 😎

Use Chatfuel’s [Save to Google Sheets plugin](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sg88Y92T4Sg) to export the contest entrants, their messages, and their info to a spreadsheet. It’ll be much easier to work with that format than manually sorting through your inbox.

## 3.Lots of shoppers abandoning carts without purchasing

### Chatfuel’s Rx: Cart Reminders

The average cart-abandonment rate for ecommerce is about 70%. It’s an ailment that affects all online retailers—but our cart reminders can ease the pain! This simple app can help you recover up to 7x more revenue than with reminders sent by email alone. And the best part? They take just three clicks to set up.

‍ The way Cart Reminders work is simple:

1. A user who is signed into their Facebook account visits your store. They opt in to receiving messages from you.

2. They stop at some point in their cutomer journey and leave without completing the purchase.

3. Your bot reminds them about the item (s) on Messenger to encourage a purchase.

<figure><img srcset="https://storage.googleapis.com/chatfuel-cms-staging/pic/xs_7_chatbot_plugins_to_solve_common_ecommerce_store_problems_1_4e53d73020/xs_7_chatbot_plugins_to_solve_common_ecommerce_store_problems_1_4e53d73020.webp 300w, https://storage.googleapis.com/chatfuel-cms-staging/pic/sm_7_chatbot_plugins_to_solve_common_ecommerce_store_problems_1_4e53d73020/sm_7_chatbot_plugins_to_solve_common_ecommerce_store_problems_1_4e53d73020.webp 768w, https://storage.googleapis.com/chatfuel-cms-staging/pic/md_7_chatbot_plugins_to_solve_common_ecommerce_store_problems_1_4e53d73020/md_7_chatbot_plugins_to_solve_common_ecommerce_store_problems_1_4e53d73020.webp 1280w, https://storage.googleapis.com/chatfuel-cms-staging/pic/lg_7_chatbot_plugins_to_solve_common_ecommerce_store_problems_1_4e53d73020/lg_7_chatbot_plugins_to_solve_common_ecommerce_store_problems_1_4e53d73020.webp 1920w, https://storage.googleapis.com/chatfuel-cms-staging/pic/xl_7_chatbot_plugins_to_solve_common_ecommerce_store_problems_1_4e53d73020/xl_7_chatbot_plugins_to_solve_common_ecommerce_store_problems_1_4e53d73020.webp 940w" width="940" height="788" src="https://storage.googleapis.com/chatfuel-cms-staging/pic/original_7_chatbot_plugins_to_solve_common_ecommerce_store_problems_1_4e53d73020/original_7_chatbot_plugins_to_solve_common_ecommerce_store_problems_1_4e53d73020.webp" alt="Cart Reminders for Shopify"><figcaption>It takes just three clicks to set up Chatfuel’s Cart Reminders app, which can help you recover up to 7x more abandoned-cart revenue.</figcaption></figure>

Messenger reminders have high open rates (80%) and click-through rates (35%), so the user is more likely to return to your store and convert. Chatfuel will even show you how much revenue the plugin has recovered. You can measure its impact in actual dollars!

<figure><img srcset="https://storage.googleapis.com/chatfuel-cms-staging/pic/xs_7_chatbot_plugins_to_solve_common_ecommerce_store_problems_2_8670156a48/xs_7_chatbot_plugins_to_solve_common_ecommerce_store_problems_2_8670156a48.webp 300w, https://storage.googleapis.com/chatfuel-cms-staging/pic/sm_7_chatbot_plugins_to_solve_common_ecommerce_store_problems_2_8670156a48/sm_7_chatbot_plugins_to_solve_common_ecommerce_store_problems_2_8670156a48.webp 768w, https://storage.googleapis.com/chatfuel-cms-staging/pic/md_7_chatbot_plugins_to_solve_common_ecommerce_store_problems_2_8670156a48/md_7_chatbot_plugins_to_solve_common_ecommerce_store_problems_2_8670156a48.webp 1280w, https://storage.googleapis.com/chatfuel-cms-staging/pic/lg_7_chatbot_plugins_to_solve_common_ecommerce_store_problems_2_8670156a48/lg_7_chatbot_plugins_to_solve_common_ecommerce_store_problems_2_8670156a48.webp 1920w, https://storage.googleapis.com/chatfuel-cms-staging/pic/xl_7_chatbot_plugins_to_solve_common_ecommerce_store_problems_2_8670156a48/xl_7_chatbot_plugins_to_solve_common_ecommerce_store_problems_2_8670156a48.webp 968w" width="968" height="836" src="https://storage.googleapis.com/chatfuel-cms-staging/pic/original_7_chatbot_plugins_to_solve_common_ecommerce_store_problems_2_8670156a48/original_7_chatbot_plugins_to_solve_common_ecommerce_store_problems_2_8670156a48.webp" alt="Chatfuel's Cart Reminders tool "><figcaption>The Cart Reminders tool will show you exactly how many dollars in revenue it recovers for you.</figcaption></figure>

## 4.Organic traffic that’s not being engaged or converted

### Chatfuel’s Rx: The Acquire Users from Comments tool

Are you taking advantage of the existing organic traffic to your Facebook page? If you’re already getting comments on your posts, use our Comments Autoreply tool to turn those visitors into customers. They get more information about your brand, which they’ve already expressed interest in. You get more users into your chatbot sales funnel. Win-win!

It’s another powerful plugin that’s incredibly easy to set up. Just select the post you want this tool to apply to. Then choose whether you want it to affect all commenters or only those who use a specific keyword. Once set up, your chatbot will automatically message commenters who fit the criteria. From there, it can engage and drive these users to your store.

**Bonus**:

You can also set your bot to apply an attribute to users whose comments include a keyword. For example, an athletic-apparel store could create a post asking users how they prefer to exercise: running or swimming. The bot can tag those who comment running with one attribute, and those who comment swimming with another. Next time they run a promotion on running gear, it’ll be easy to message just to those who expressed interest in that sport.

## 5.Insufficient data to tell what’s working and what isn’t

### Chatfuel’s Rx: The A/B Test plugin

“The most important single thing is to focus obsessively on the customer.” Jeff Bezos said this, and he knows a thing or two about running a successful ecommerce business. One element of this mindset is paying attention to how your audience responds to the content you present to them. You need to figure out exactly what gets them to engage and interact, and exactly what causes drop-offs and loss of interest. That way, you can do more of the former and less of the latter. The key to uncovering these insights is data.

To gather this kind of data for your chatbot, use Chatfuel’s A/B Test plugin. t’ll evenly distribute traffic to two bot variations that are identical except for one key difference (like welcome message, CTA, or imagery). For example, have it send 50% of bot visitors to to one, and the other 50% to another. It’ll then automatically measure how each variant converts. That way, you’ll know exactly what your audience responds to best. From there, you can double down on more content or elements like that to optimize your bot’s effectiveness.

<figure><img srcset="https://storage.googleapis.com/chatfuel-cms-staging/pic/xs_7_chatbot_plugins_to_solve_common_ecommerce_store_problems_3_ba9169bf10/xs_7_chatbot_plugins_to_solve_common_ecommerce_store_problems_3_ba9169bf10.webp 300w, https://storage.googleapis.com/chatfuel-cms-staging/pic/sm_7_chatbot_plugins_to_solve_common_ecommerce_store_problems_3_ba9169bf10/sm_7_chatbot_plugins_to_solve_common_ecommerce_store_problems_3_ba9169bf10.webp 768w, https://storage.googleapis.com/chatfuel-cms-staging/pic/md_7_chatbot_plugins_to_solve_common_ecommerce_store_problems_3_ba9169bf10/md_7_chatbot_plugins_to_solve_common_ecommerce_store_problems_3_ba9169bf10.webp 1280w, https://storage.googleapis.com/chatfuel-cms-staging/pic/lg_7_chatbot_plugins_to_solve_common_ecommerce_store_problems_3_ba9169bf10/lg_7_chatbot_plugins_to_solve_common_ecommerce_store_problems_3_ba9169bf10.webp 1920w, https://storage.googleapis.com/chatfuel-cms-staging/pic/xl_7_chatbot_plugins_to_solve_common_ecommerce_store_problems_3_ba9169bf10/xl_7_chatbot_plugins_to_solve_common_ecommerce_store_problems_3_ba9169bf10.webp 940w" width="940" height="788" src="https://storage.googleapis.com/chatfuel-cms-staging/pic/original_7_chatbot_plugins_to_solve_common_ecommerce_store_problems_3_ba9169bf10/original_7_chatbot_plugins_to_solve_common_ecommerce_store_problems_3_ba9169bf10.webp" alt="A/B testing in your chatbot"><figcaption>Use Chatfuel’s A/B Test plugin to easily see which elements of your bot users respond to best, like one image versus another with all other elements kept the same.</figcaption></figure>

## 6.Ineffective Facebook ad targeting

### Chatfuel’s Rx: Export users from the *People* tab

Welcome to one of the easiest ways to make your Facebook ads more effective! You probably already know that Chatfuel’s [*People* tab](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oX6H5KAZo7k) is where all the juicy data about your bot subscribers is stored. But did you know that you can export this information to Ads Manager to create highly targeted Lookalike audiences? It takes just one click with our Segment Sync feature.

Let’s say you have an online organic-juice store. You’ve learned that your bot subscribers with the *vegan* **attribute** tend to become customers very often. You can filter out just the subscribers with that tag in the People tab. Export their data to Facebook using Segment Sync so you can create a Lookalike audience. Facebook will then show your ads to new customers who share similar characteristics with these most-valuable users. ## The brand

Photobooth Deluxe is a German company founded by Jürgen Mayr. This entrepreneur began his career as a wedding photographer, but decided he wanted to do things a bit differently than others in the industry.

Years ago, Mayr began to notice the rise in popularity of photo booths for weddings in Asia and the US. He got a friend to build him a prototype, and in 2013, he started building his own. From then on, many of his fellow wedding photographers who saw them wanted one for their own businesses.

Since then, Mayr has built and sold 500 photo-booth systems across Europe—but that’s not the key source of his income today. Instead, it’s supplies (the specialized ink and paper for the photo booths) that he sells regularly to past clients. The Messenger bot he built now handles all these transactions—and he won first prize in Chatfuel’s [2019 Ecommerce Bot Competition](https://www.facebook.com/groups/chatfuel/permalink/671349200060490/) for it.

## The problem

Pre-chatbot, the procedure for reordering these supplies wasn’t easy for Mayr or his clients. Taking down their information via phone and email to send to the drop-shipper was tedious, and took 10–20 minutes each time. Plus, orders could only be processed when Mayr was available. If he were on vacation or at an event, for example, the orders wouldn’t be shipped until days later when he had time to submit them.

95% of his clients are on Facebook. So when he heard about chatbots, he knew he had to see if one could help him streamline the process. “The goal, ” Mayr explains, “was to enable my clients to order supply materials without my physical presence.”

## The solution

Mayr held the common misconception that you need coding knowledge to build a Messenger chatbot, so he turned to a freelancer for help. But when the end result didn’t turn out well, he decided to take the project on himself. One Friday morning, he set out to build a chatbot with Chatfuel by Sunday night. “If I can get it done in time, great. If not, I’ll treat it as a good experience and know that chatbots aren’t for me, ” Mayr says.

He started with a sea of sticky notes on his wall to help him plan the bot’s flow. It’s a great illustration of his advice for other bot builders, which is that planning is crucial. 90% of the work—[mapping out a logical flow](https://youtu.be/HX-zA-DkPaU)—happens before you even log into Chatfuel. And then once you do: “Do something, and test it, tweak it, and test it again!” says Mayr.

The bot he built and fine-tuned then does exactly what he wanted it to. It gathers all the order, shipping, and payment information from first-time clients, and notifies the drop-shipper to ship. For repeat customers, all past information is saved, and the reorder process takes just two taps.

“So if I’m on vacation for two weeks, for example, my clients can still order, they can still get their materials/supplies. When I come back home, all I have to do is write the invoices, ” says Mayr. 🏝️

## The recipe

> “Don’t build a bot a bot to serve you as a vendor; build a bot to serve your clients” — Jürgen Mayr, Photobooth Deluxe founder

These are a few of the features and plugins Mayr used to build his super-effective Messenger chatbot:

- **User attributes.** Mayr uses this Chatfuel feature to keep track of how much each of his clients have spent with him in total. He set an attribute to populate with the total amount, which updates automatically each time an order is placed. Using attributes also gives him the option to [create custom and Lookalike Audiences](https://docs.chatfuel.com/en/articles/1575719-how-to-create-facebook-and-instagram-ads/) for [sponsored messages](https://chatfuel.com/blog/sponsored-messages-guide-to-reengaging-chatbot-subscribers/) and other Facebook ads, so he can target his most valuable customers (or find prospects similar to them). *You can now use Segment Sync to send subscriber data for these audiences to Facebook in one click.*

- **Notify Admin via Email plugin.** Each time a client orders through Mayr’s chatbot, it instantly sends an email to him for his records. It also sends one to his drop-shipper, so they can package and ship the order right away.

- [**Sponsored messages**](https://chatfuel.com/blog/sponsored-messages-guide-to-reengaging-chatbot-subscribers/). After a customer places an order, Mayr’s bot asks if they’d like to receive a supply check-in notification in 30 days. Now that Facebook’s policies have changed, he plans to use sponsored messages to send these, which simply ask if the client needs to reorder. Mayr says his customers often forget to stock up on supplies otherwise, so these reminders are helpful for them and bring in more revenue for him. *You can now use our native ads integration to easily set up sponsored messages for your Facebook chatbot.*

<figure><img srcset="https://storage.googleapis.com/chatfuel-cms-staging/pic/xs_ecommerce_entrepreneur_uses_chatfuel_bot_to_automate_over_100_000_in_sales_5_fc8ea7d2e6/xs_ecommerce_entrepreneur_uses_chatfuel_bot_to_automate_over_100_000_in_sales_5_fc8ea7d2e6.webp 300w, https://storage.googleapis.com/chatfuel-cms-staging/pic/sm_ecommerce_entrepreneur_uses_chatfuel_bot_to_automate_over_100_000_in_sales_5_fc8ea7d2e6/sm_ecommerce_entrepreneur_uses_chatfuel_bot_to_automate_over_100_000_in_sales_5_fc8ea7d2e6.webp 768w, https://storage.googleapis.com/chatfuel-cms-staging/pic/md_ecommerce_entrepreneur_uses_chatfuel_bot_to_automate_over_100_000_in_sales_5_fc8ea7d2e6/md_ecommerce_entrepreneur_uses_chatfuel_bot_to_automate_over_100_000_in_sales_5_fc8ea7d2e6.webp 1280w, https://storage.googleapis.com/chatfuel-cms-staging/pic/lg_ecommerce_entrepreneur_uses_chatfuel_bot_to_automate_over_100_000_in_sales_5_fc8ea7d2e6/lg_ecommerce_entrepreneur_uses_chatfuel_bot_to_automate_over_100_000_in_sales_5_fc8ea7d2e6.webp 1920w, https://storage.googleapis.com/chatfuel-cms-staging/pic/xl_ecommerce_entrepreneur_uses_chatfuel_bot_to_automate_over_100_000_in_sales_5_fc8ea7d2e6/xl_ecommerce_entrepreneur_uses_chatfuel_bot_to_automate_over_100_000_in_sales_5_fc8ea7d2e6.webp 2000w" width="2000" height="1123" src="https://storage.googleapis.com/chatfuel-cms-staging/pic/original_ecommerce_entrepreneur_uses_chatfuel_bot_to_automate_over_100_000_in_sales_5_fc8ea7d2e6/original_ecommerce_entrepreneur_uses_chatfuel_bot_to_automate_over_100_000_in_sales_5_fc8ea7d2e6.webp" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

- **Third-party API**. The next update Mayr has planned for his bot involves an API from the shipping company he uses. He’s going to connect Chatfuel to it via Zapier or [Integromat](https://www.make.com/en/integrations/chatfuel?fromImt=1&/). That way, the bot can automatically message customers with a tracking number, so they can keep tabs on their shipment. “Always keep the client well informed, and make it easy for him to order, ” advises Mayr.

- [**JSON API**](https://docs.chatfuel.com/en/articles/735122-json-api/). It occasionally happened that new-order emails would be missed by the drop-shipper, or would end up in their spam folders. To solve this issue, Mayr [used the JSON API](https://chatfuel.com/blog/json-api-examples/) to integrate Twilio. His drop-shipping company now receives an SMS text triggered by the bot, so they know to look out for a new-order email.

<figure><img><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

He also encourages other bot builders to seek feedback before launching. “Maybe ask a couple of friends to test it. Ask them to be very, very critical with the bot. Ask if there were any steps where they didn’t know what to do, because that means you have to do better there.” And always design with the customer or end user in mind, he adds. “Don’t build a bot to serve you as a vendor; build a bot to serve your clients.”

## The results

> “The quality and ease of service is more important to \[my clients\] than getting the lowest price” –Jürgen Mayr, Photobooth Deluxe founder

Since he implemented the bot, Mayr has **automated over $100,000 in revenue** with his Messenger chatbot. “It’s quite amazing, ” admits Mayr, “because it’s almost hands-free. I don’t have to do a lot. I have to write the invoice at the end; that’s it.” And he’s even working to automate that final step: He’s already asked his invoicing company to consider adding an API for their service.

Mayr also notes that he gets more sales because the ordering process via bot is so simple. Normally clients shop around to check prices with different vendors before ordering photo-booth supplies, he explains. “But I make it so easy for them to reorder, so it doesn’t matter if a certain item is a few euros more.” His clients order anyway, because “the quality and ease of service is more important to them than getting the lowest price.”

## Build a picture-perfect bot for your brand

“Chatfuel is amazing. It’s fun to work with, and you don’t have to have developer skills. You can do a lot just with a logical mind, ” says Mayr. He studied economics and tax law himself, which illustrates that building a Chatfuel Messenger bot without a coding background is completely possible. “If you really need a developer for some advanced functionality, ” he adds, “you can probably find someone in the [Chatfuel community](https://www.facebook.com/groups/chatfuel/). You can do almost everything yourself though; the sky or your brain is the limit!”

## The problem

[DECEN’s](https://decen.com.mx) small team had too many tasks on their plate. They were pleased to be getting more customers than ever, but their Messenger inbox was overflowing with inquiries. The company’s founder Omar Cortes started searching for solutions:

> **“I was already looking for a couple people to join the team just for answering inquiries. Then I found Chatfuel.”** –Omar Cortes, founder

## The solution

“I logged into Chatfuel with my Facebook account, ” Cortes continues, “and I had my own chatbot working by the end of the day.” The bot he built acts as a first line of defense for customer support, but works as a sales funnel and content-marketing opportunity too. It’s designed to:

📝 provide answers to common questions

🔍 let users browse products right within Messenger

Cortes has used the bot for various successful campaigns to boost sales, generate leads, and increase brand awareness and [customer loyalty](https://chatfuel.com/blog/customer-loyalty-chatbot), too. DECEN’s results from their chatbot were so impressive, they won Chatfuel’s 2017 bot competition! 🏆

## The recipe

“I’ve tried other chatbot platforms and I still find Chatfuel the most useful, reliable, and easy to work with, ” says Cortes. To get the impressive results that helped them grow their brand, the DECEN team used these Chatfuel functions and features:

- [**FAQs**](https://chatfuel.com/blog/chatbot-for-customer-service). The DECEN team built [an FAQ functionality](https://youtu.be/A499Eeq9Lq8) into their chatbot so it could help with customer inquiries. They included the most common questions plus informative answers, and made them easy to identify with emoji.

- [**Comments Autoreply**](https://chatfuel.com/blog/how-to-turn-facebook-post-commenters-into-customers). DECEN created a post on their Facebook page to announce a giveaway of one of their most popular cribs. To enter, expectant mothers simply had to comment with the month their baby was due. The bot automatically messaged all commenters, engaging even those who didn’t win.

- **Gallery cards.** The furniture pieces DECEN sells are beautiful, so they took advantage of the aesthetics of their products in their chatbot. The team used gallery cards to display eye-catching images of different products, and included details and a link to shop for or share each one.

- **Disable user input.** A [lesser-known Chatfuel feature](https://chatfuel.com/blog/hidden-benefits-of-chatbots) is the ability to disable the composer, which means users won’t be able to send free-text input. It’s a good option for bots that don’t use [AI](https://docs.chatfuel.com/en/articles/828883-keywords) or the User Input plugin. Because that way, users won’t trigger the [Default Answer](https://docs.chatfuel.com/en/articles/4413516-default-answers) message (usually something like *Sorry, I didn’t get that*), which may distract them and prevent them from converting.

## The results

The original goal for the DECEN chatbot was simply to save the support team time and increase efficiency. As **the bot now handles 98% of customer inquiries**, it’s been a major success—but that’s not all it did for the brand. It also helped them:

**📈 Increase sales.** Cortes used to focus his sales efforts on expo shows, but he now uses Chatfuel as a 24/7/365 ecommerce solution. “Today, 80% of total sales come from the bot, ” he shares.

**📧 Get more warm leads.** Remember the Facebook-post giveaway DECEN did? It doubled monthly sales, generated nearly 4,000 qualified leads, and — thanks to the [JSON API plugin](https://chatfuel.com/blog/json-api-examples) — added another 1,000 subscribers to the brand’s MailChimp list!

**❤️ Gain social proof.** The campaign had another benefit, too. The bot messaged entrants who didn’t win, asking them to leave a review. The result was over 100 glowing reviews in just a few days, which “allowed me to sell easily, ” says Cortes.

Business is booming now, so much so that DECEN has just opened their first physical store. However, ecommerce will remain a strong focus for the brand.

> **“I think I have successfully found a great path to sell anything online using Chatfuel, creative content, and an ecommerce site.”** –Omar Cortes, founder
